How to control TifTuf Bermuda seed heads

It’s that time of year again where you might notice seed heads popping up in your lawn and unfortunately, TifTuf Bermuda does have quite a prolific seed head production when conditions are right.

Although not harmful to your lawn, seed heads can be scratchy underfoot and make your lawn look uneven and also give it a purple tinge/hue.

Find out in this blog how to identify and control the seed heads in your TifTuf Bermuda.

How to identify TifTuf Bermuda seed heads?

Often confused with weeds, TifTuf seed heads are 3 pronged thin ‘windmills’ that grow from the lawn leaf. They can be throughout the whole lawn or form in patches as the picture below.

As the blades grow purple, an abundance of seed heads can give your TifTuf lawn a purple colouring.

If you don’t have TifTuf Bermuda and you think you have seed heads too, you can go here to identify seed heads in different lawn varieties.

When do TifTuf Bermuda seed heads appear?

Seed heads in all lawn varieties are common through change of seasons and in Spring and Summer. They are your lawns natural flower and most the time are no cause for concern. However, sometimes, they are a good indication of some sort of lawn stress.

How to control TifTuf Bermuda seed heads?

Most of the time, especially if it’s just because of a sudden change in weather, your TifTuf will stop going to seed on its own. This usually takes a few weeks and simply regularly mowing your lawn will keep it looking great.

However, if you have some at an unusual time of year, or that won’t go away in time, it could be a sign that your lawn is under stress. The stress is most likely from lack of water or nutrients. Make sure to double check your sprinkler system and give your lawn a good soak if needed. If you haven’t recently, give your lawn a good fertilise, for TifTuf we recommend the ProPlus Natural Carbon Fertiliser

1 litre Primomaxx

If you really want an immaculate lawn with no seed heads and your lawn is in a season that it is actively growing (spring/summer), then you can apply Primo Maxx. Its primary use is as a plant growth regulator – to slow the leaf growth of the lawn, however it does also have the additional benefit of seed head suppression. If you’re struggling to keep up with mowing and are bothered by your seed heads, we highly recommend this product.
