Can You Install a New Lawn in Winter?

Everyone knows the warmer months are great for installing a new lawn, but what about winter? Well, the good news is you can install a new lawn in winter and you even might find there are some benefits too!

There is a common misconception that installing a new warm season turf like Sir Walter DNA Certified cannot be done in cool conditions. This isn’t the truth, as turf is installed successfully all year round here in South Australia.

Why lay a new lawn in winter?

Less irrigating is required in winter to establish a new lawn. This is especially true if we’re blessed with a wet winter here in South Australia. Rainfall through these months can contribute the entire amount of water your lawn needs to establish.

By installing turf now you can have a fully established lawn in time for summer. Why wait until spring where you can’t use your lawn until it’s established? Get a head start now!

You don’t need to mow!
While your lawn establishs in winter, it won’t grow as quickly so you won’t need to get the mower out until the weather warms up.

Here at The Turf Farm we undertake a number of measures to ensure the turf we supply during winter is top quality. This includes the use of ColourGuard Plus applications.

Things to look out for when laying lawn in winter

Although it’s still a good time to lay lawn, like any season, winter does come with some extra caveats. Just keep in mind, when laying a new lawn in winter the lawn will not root down properly until the weather warms up and it starts growing again. This doesn’t mean anything is wrong, and your lawn isn’t dying. It is simply sitting idle until it gets some warmer temperatures so it can fully establish.

Weeds are also prevalent at this time of year. That’s why we highly recommend an application of Oxafert weed pre-emergent at the time of laying and again once spring arrives. It’s also a good idea to keep All Purpose Weed Control or Estate Herbicide on hand for any common broadleaf weeds that pop up at this time of year.
