A lush green lawn is the pride of any home, but unwanted weeds can quickly turn your lawn into an eyesore. Here’s some of our top tips to preventing weeds before they become a problem.
Understanding weeds
Weeds compete with your turf for nutrients, water, and sunlight. They typically thrive in areas where the lawn is stressed, thin, or damaged. Common Australian lawn weeds include bindii, clover, dandelions, and nutgrass, which can all be successfully prevented with the below tips.
Prevent weed infiltrations through lawn care
The healthier your lawn, the better it can compete against weeds. A stressed out lawn will leave holes and opportunities for weeds to infiltrate. Make sure to keep on top of your regular lawn care regime as this will keep your lawn healthy year-round and help prevent weeds.
- Maintain your turf at the recommended height for your specific grass variety. Mowing too short can stress out your lawn, creating perfect conditions for weed growth.
- Water deep and infrequently to encourage strong lawn root growth and therefore a healthier, thicker lawn better equipped to choke out weeds.
- Fertilise regularly. A well-fed lawn crowds out weeds naturally. Apply a quality slow-release fertiliser at the beginning of every season.
Prevent weeds with weed pre-emergents
After maintaining a healthy lawn, your next point of attack should be weed pre-emergents. Pre-emergents target weed seedlings before they take hold, therefore stopping weeds from popping up in your lawn.

Applied through vulnerable seasons such as Autumn and Winter pre-emergents such as Oxafert, Oxafert Plus and Spartan Herbicide will give you up to 12 weeks protection from growth of common lawn weeds. These are a great option for weed prevention in most popular lawn varieties including Sir Walter DNA Certified, TifTuf Bermuda, Common Couch and Kikuyu.
When prevention isn't enough
Despite our best efforts, we might still get some pesky weeds rearing their heads in our lawn. Early identification and prompt treatment is the best action to prevent them from spreading further.
- If you only have a few, you can hand-pull isolated weeds, ensuring you remove the entire root.
- Spot-treat with selective herbicides suitable for your turf type. Check out our weed identifier here to find the weed and treatment recommendation for you.
So you can treat them quickly, we recommend keeping a broad-spectrum herbicide such as All Purpose Weed Control handy for when common lawn weeds do pop up in your lawn.
