Top tips for mowing your lawn

Now is the season where your lawn mower gets a workout! Through summer your lawn will need more frequent mows to keep up with growth. Here are some of our top tips to help you get the best cut when mowing your lawn.

Mow in the cool of the day

During hot periods, it's best to mow at the cooler parts of the day e.g. early morning or late evening. Don't mow if exceptionally hot weather is expected soon.

Only take off 1/3 of the leaf

Most of the green is in the top of the plant and if you cut too much off the leaf length, you can stress your lawn making it more susceptible to weeds, pest and disease.

Mow when your lawn is dry

It is best to water your lawn after you have mowed. If you mow a wet lawn, you risk tearing the leaf blades rather than cutting them, leaving a 'chopped' look.

Mow your lawn regularly

Regularly mowing your lawn promotes lateral growth and a healthier, happier lawn. If you do leave it too long, remember to bring it back over a few mows.

Switch mowing directions

Mowing in different directions contributes to a thicker, healthier lawn by encouraging the individual blades to grow straight, which in turn provides more space for new blades to grow.

Sharpen your blades

Dull blades rip at the grass leaf and can leave it bruised and rough-ended taking away from its finish. You can also save yourself time and effort as sharp blades decrease mowing resistance!

And when you do all this, make sure it's the right height!

Maintaining your lawn at an optimal mow height will keep your lawn thriving! As a general rule of thumb, it is best to mow lower during warmer months and higher during cooler months. Additionally, shadier spots need a longer leaf length to enhance photosynthesising capacity!

Mowing height of your grass also depends on the lawn variety.
