Which lawn is the best in shade?

Now that the sun has come out, you’re probably keen to get your backyard transformed into something the whole family can enjoy. But, maybe the sun hasn’t come out as much as you expected?

Shade from the house, the neighbour’s tree and the pergola are all playing their part. So, which variety do you go for now; which lawn is the best in shade?

Sir Walter DNA Certified Logo on garden

Sir Walter DNA Certified is a tried and tested variety that has incredible shade tolerance. It requires a minimum of 3 hours of direct sunlight in order to grow and thrive. This makes it an excellent choice for backyards that don’t receive a lot of sunlight throughout the day.

You can’t go wrong with Sir Walter, from the cool tablelands, the dry west and to the tropical north, it will stand up to it all. It has stood the test of time, proving again and again that it will grow anywhere; in full sun or 70% shade, in extreme heat, frost or drought.

Don’t get caught out! Due to its popularity, many retailers sell a Sir Walter branded substitute. In order to ensure your Sir Walter has all these great qualities, look for the logo and choose Sir Walter DNA Certified from an accredited grower.

RTF Tall Fescue Logo in front of garden

RTF Tall Fescue is a cool season grass recommended for Adelaide Hills and South East areas where the climate is cooler and rainfall is higher.

Cool season lawns go hand in hand with shade tolerance, so RTF Tall Fescue is a great choice for a garden with a bit more shade. It requires a minimum of 3 hours of direct sunlight a day.

Another great benefit of having a cool season lawn is that it stays green all year round! We highly recommend RTF Tall Fescue in boutique lawn areas where keeping up appearances is the main goal.

TifTuf logo on lawn in shade

This one’s for the fine leaf lovers! TifTuf Bermuda has impressive shade tolerance for a fine leaf lawn due to its increased gibbrelic acid production. This results in superior stimulation of photosynthesis which means it has a greater ability to absorb sunlight! TifTuf requires around 4-5 hours of direct sunlight a day to perform at its best.

Not only does TifTuf have great shade tolerance, it also maintains a good winter colour and is extremely drought tolerant. It’s the first turf grass in the world to receive the Smart Approved WaterMark!

If you have some shade in your garden, hopefully one of these 3 great varieties will suit you!

It’s important to note that lawns in heavily shaded areas will need a bit more TLC than your average lawn. They might not be able to handle as much traffic and may need some extra time to recover from damage.
