TifTuf Bermuda is a new and exciting lawn variety that has taken South Australia by storm! It’s drought tolerance, shade tolerance, fast growth and fine leaf appearance has made it an extremely popular variety for our climate.
A question we often get is if TifTuf Bermuda is available in seed?
Unlike some other couch varieties, TifTuf Bermuda is a sterile lawn. Although it does produce seed heads in some seasons and when under stress, these seeds are infertile and therefore it cannot be grown from them. TifTuf can only be grown successfully from its own vegetative matter.
TifTuf Hybrid Bermuda is the product of almost 25 years of research and development from one of the world’s leading turf grass breeders, the University of Georgia. TifTuf has been hand selected out of almost 30,000 different Bermuda varieties for its superior qualities.
Once chosen, it has been tirelessly propagated from a small sample into thousands of hectares which are now growing in turf farms across Australia, and the world! To plant TifTuf here at The Turf Farm, we must first purchase breeding stock from select accredited farms in Australia and then plant into our pivots using a specialised turf planting machine.
After 12-18 months of growth on farm, the lawn is ready for harvest. During the harvesting process, small ribbons are left in-between rows. These ribbons, coupled with the remainder of root system left below ground, will eventually re-grow into more harvestable TifTuf Bermuda.
The genetic purity of our TifTuf Bermuda is audited regularly by AusGAP – the Australian turf certification program. This certification system not only ensures the genetic purity of our turfgrass varieties; it provides assurance that the entire production and delivery process is undertaken to the highest industry standards.

Although instant roll out lawn is more of an initial monetary outlay than seed, TifTuf Bermuda can save you money and time in the long run. This incredible variety uses 38% less water than other turf varieties and requires only ¼ of the fertiliser.
